General facts

(HB 1936) The International Phonetic Association was founded in 1886 by a small group of French teachers who had found phonetic transcription a useful instrument for imparting a good pronunciation of English to their pupils, and who wished to popularise a method which they had found so helpful. Very soon the aim of he Association became more general and comprehensive, and for many years comprised the reform of language teaching in general as well as in its particular phonetic aspect. At the present time the Association is entirely occupied with phonetic matters. It is promoting phonetic research in many directions with the practical objects of (i) improving methods of teaching and learning pronunciation, (2) devising improved orthographies on a phonetic basis. From the first the Association has laid particular stress on the importance of phonetic writing. In 1888 it drew up the now well-known International Phonetic Alphabet for use in its journal. This alphabet has from time to time been improved, and extended to meet the needs of new languages, but its most important features have remained unchanged since it was first designed. It is now used in a large number of dictionaries and linguistic text-books dealing with many different languages, both European, Asiatic and African. Further, in the words of the 'Aim and Principles of the International Phonetic Association', 1904, "the constant intercourse between the members of the Association has tended to create among language teachers all over the world a spirit of good feeling and brotherliness, which is as conducive to scientific progress as to the advancement of peace between nations.
