Improvement of the health and welfare of seamen afloat and in port.

General facts

Set up in February 1927, on the recommendation of the First Conference on Health in the Mercantile Marine (Oslo 1926), at the request of the Norwegian Red Cross and the League of Red Cross Societies. The Standing Committee on the Health and Welfare of Seamen set itself the following immediate aims : (1) The preparation of a handbook for the use of captains of vessels having no medical officer on board; (2) The standardisation of ships1 medicine chests; (3) The extension of wireless medical consultations; (4) The improvement of the conditions affecting sailors while in port.
